About Shadow Catchers
Shadow Catchers was established in Washington State in 1992 specializing in the Photographers and Photography of the Pacific Northwest and the Salish Sea region of the United States. We are producers and distributors of photographs licensed from The Susan Parish Collection of Photography, established in Washington State in 1982 and other collections and from regional photographers.
Early American Indians called photographers "Shadow Catchers" believing photographs caught and held their shadow or spirit in a prison within the box. After 40+ years I've worked with their likeness within the photographs ~ I agree. Yet the Indians Curtis captured were not the only ones afraid of this new magic made with the earliest cameras. In fact, most people were shocked, amazed, and even fearful seeing their first daguerreotype. The photographs truly come alive when you realize these times, places and people lived and walked where we walked. My own life's work is a special calling to preserve, protect and share the photographic history of my home region ~ one of the most beautiful and quickly changing regions in North America."
"I'd been a professional working photographer since 1975 when I started collecting photographs seriously in 1982, with the purchase of the Jeffers Studio Collection. I named my stock photography business Shadow Catchers after the original Shadow Catcher ~ Edward S. Curtis ~ a fellow Washingtonian and someone I admire for his foresight, his art and craft, his drive, courage, and unwavering tenacity in his mission. I envy his photographic adventures and idolize his enormous talents. And saddened that he suffered for his vision and, like so many famous artists who gave their all, lose everything in their lives and yet give to the future precious priceless moments in time. I'm happy to begin offering some of my favorite Edward Curtis photographs in tribute.
